INDEPENDENT HOME AIR CONDITIONING GUIDANCE

How to estimate home air conditioning running costs

Separate the equipment’s heating or cooling capacity from the electricity it uses. A useful cost illustration shows its assumptions and leaves room for real-world variation.

Shropshire Aircon is an independent information and enquiry website operated by Stephen Meredith. We do not carry out installations. Enquiries are reviewed by the operator and any next steps are agreed separately.

Capacity is not electricity consumption

A heating or cooling-capacity figure describes output, not necessarily electrical input. A product described by a cooling-capacity rating should not be assumed to draw that many kilowatts of electricity continuously.

Ask for the exact model combination and an explanation of the input information being used. If a proposal includes an electricity estimate, establish whether it is based on a fixed condition, a seasonal calculation or an assumed average for a use pattern. These are different things.

A transparent calculation

For a simple illustration, multiply average electrical input in kilowatts by operating hours and your electricity price per kilowatt hour. The result covers the electricity represented by those assumptions; it is not a guaranteed bill or a performance forecast.

For example, if average input were 0.6 kW for five hours at an assumed £0.30/kWh, the result would be £0.90. All three inputs are hypothetical. They are not the current tariff, a typical model's consumption or an estimate for your home.

Try your own assumptions

Use the calculator below to understand the arithmetic. Only use an input figure you understand; do not substitute the cooling-capacity rating. If you do not know likely average input, ask the proposing contractor to explain an appropriate estimate and its limitations.

What changes actual use?

The building, weather, occupancy, settings and equipment operation can all change consumption. Rooms used at different times may have different requirements. Real operation can vary rather than remaining at one fixed input for every hour.

Discuss glazing, shading and insulation alongside the system proposal. Energy Saving Trust offers practical guidance on keeping homes cool. Those measures are relevant planning considerations, not a promised reduction in this calculator's result.

Hours and tariff need care

Distinguish time available to operate from hours actually represented by your assumed average. Avoid counting a low average and reducing the hours again without understanding the calculation. Use your own electricity tariff and check its units; pence per kWh and pounds per kWh are different.

The illustration excludes other charges or costs unless you include them explicitly elsewhere. It does not calculate an entire household electricity bill, servicing or installation cost.

Seasonal figures answer a different question

Seasonal efficiency information can help compare equipment within the stated test framework. It should not be treated as a promise of the electricity drawn during any particular hour. Ask which figure is being used and what it represents.

Do not divide a headline capacity by a seasonal rating and present the result as guaranteed continuous consumption. Model documentation and a properly explained assessment are a better basis for discussing expected operation.

Compare heating and cooling separately

If the system is intended for both, ask for each requirement to be explained. Heating and cooling performance information is not interchangeable. A comparison with another heater also needs a fair account of the actual rooms, hours, tariff and conditions.

Nor does an arrangement with fewer outdoor units automatically mean a lower bill. Compare proposals serving the same brief and ask the contractor to explain the assumptions behind any saving claim.

Questions to take to the proposal

Keep these answers with the equipment proposal. This guide is independent information, not a system-specific cost promise or an energy tariff recommendation.
